Exclamation marks are used to exclaim something. Here are five circumstance where an exclamation can work well.
Astonishment: Wow! So many candles!
- Emphasis: I love cake!
- Emotion: I’m so angry the cake was all gone!
- Excitement: I can’t wait for my birthday!
- Surprise: Oh! What a scrumptious cake!
In each case, the exclamation mark makes the sentence more exciting, more emotional, more …
If you’re not sure whether a sentence is an exclamation – whether it needs an exclamation mark – try using a full point instead. If that seems too tame, reinstate the exclamation mark.
Only one exclamation mark is needed – and use them sparingly within your story.
