RedPen Editing: Dialogue

There are two main thrusts to this course:

  • Writing dialogue
  • Editing dialogue

The two activities are different.

  • Writing is a creative process and is best done without the internal editor chipping in.
  • Editing is almost a clerical exercise, and requires skill in the craft of writing rather than creativity.

8 topics + 27 topics

Dialogue is prevalent in fiction but is also to be found in poetry, non-fiction, films and drama. In this course, the focus is on fiction.

  • The Writing Dialogue lessons should open up your creativity and make writing dialogue easier and hopefully more enjoyable.
  • The Editing Dialogue lessons focus on making your dialogue as good as possible, applying various ‘rules’ and reviewing the effect of your dialogue within your piece.
