Lists can be bulleted or numbered or lettered.
If you use a bulleted list, there is a choice of symbols available.
Choose one and stick to it throughout the manuscript.
If you need a second layer of bulleting, choose a different symbol, for that.
Again, be consistent.
For numbered lists, there is a choice of the form of the numbers (Arabic or Roman)
- Arabic: 1, 2, 3, …
- Roman: i, ii, iii, …
plus the character to follow
- a full stop
- a closing parenthesis.
Whatever you choose, stick to it throughout the manuscript.
If you need a second level of numbered list, it’s standard practice to have Arabic for the top level (1, 2, 3, …) and Roman for the next (i, ii, iii, …).
Again there are choices.
- Upper case or lower case letter
- Character to follow: full point (.), closing parenthesis or nothing.
Consistency is the rule!
